21 Dec The Benefits Of Solar Pool Heating
You take the water where? Why the roof is the perfect place to heat your pool water.
Your utility bills arrive. Every time you open one, you roll your eyes at the three—sometimes four—figures in front of you. If you really want to enjoy the pool in your backyard, you’ll need to use either electricity or gas to heat it, won’t you?
Well no, actually. You can, of course, but that’s not the only way. If you’re happy to swim for about half the year and leave the other half for those who like to punish themselves with a wintry dash across their backyard, then you should have a think about solar pool heating.
It works by pumping water from your pool through the collector (tubes or panels) that are installed on your roof. As the water is circulated through them, it is heated naturally by the sun, before being pumped back into your pool.
Your roof absorbs heat and is usually significantly warmer than the ground. On a hot day, it can easily top 50°C. That’s what makes it the perfect place to heat your pool water.
Unlike gas heating or electric heat pumps, once you’ve made the original outlay, the running costs amount to merely covering the cost of a small pump to send the water up to your roof. And your pool season will stretch well into Spring and Autumn. What’s more, it’s an environmentally friendly choice!
One of the advantages of solar heating is that it’s flexible. It doesn’t matter if your roof is not a standard shape, or that there are skylights in the way, it can simply be installed around them. And it couldn’t be easier to control. Just set the desired temperature of your pool, and the solar heating will begin its work as soon as the roof starts to heat up.
