05 Oct The Benefits of Swimming Pool Covers
When you’re thinking about options for heating your pool, it’s natural to want to plunge into the details and start looking at whether to go with gas, solar or electric heat pumps. And while all of them will heat your pool, there’s one investment we at Supreme Heating always recommend; a pool cover. In this post, we explain why.
If you’ve ever tried boiling water on the stove top, you’ll know that a covered saucepan heats quicker. Keeping the lid on also stops the water boiling away. Translate that same concept to your swimming pool and there, in a nutshell, is why you should invest in a pool cover.
In NSW, SPASA—the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Australia—makes the observation that your pool will lose around 7mm in level every day during the summer months. And, as the water evaporates, it takes the heat with it. No surprise then that they also estimate 90% of the heat lost from your pool is from the surface.
Not only will a pool cover keep debris out of your pool, it will reduce water evaporation by up to 97%. Depending on your location, that will give you an annual water saving of between 50,000 and 72,000 litres, which is enough to fill an average sized pool.
But a pool cover does more than that. It will also help you retain up to 75% of the heat in your pool, which means you’ll save money because retaining heat makes your starting temperature higher—meaning you’ll require less energy to heat the water to your desired temperature.
A solar pool cover, like the Heatseeker Diamond range, can even increase your pool temperature. Not only are they designed to prevent heat loss, they can absorb heat from the sun and that means they can increase the temperature by up to 8oC.
