Butterfly Solar Collector

A Butterfly solar collector is an all glass evacuated tube solar collector with east-west orientation of the tubes and a special water-in-glass manifold. It is often applied in a large scale hot water installation but is well suited to a high performance solar pool heating system.

Being the first evacuated tube system in the world to use the butterfly configuration, it opens up the doors to a dedicated primary heating source for your swimming pool.

The collectors efficiently absorb any diffuse solar radiation present in cloudy conditions. Like the evacuated heat pipe system, they do not need direct sunlight to operate. A butterfly collector has 56 tubes and the manifold is made from marine grade 316 stainless steel. Just one butterfly evacuated tube collector will heat up around 20,000 litres of water, which is based on a 10°C temperature rise.

The butterfly solar collector works under a simple convection principal. Cold water enters the bottom of the manifold inlet and leaves from the outlet at the top. The flow of the water inside the glass tubes is thermally driven, giving up its heat gain to the water flowing through the central manifold. The walls of the tubes are never hot thanks to solar irradiation.

This system ensures that your solar is absolutely 100% cockatoo proof eliminating any annoying leaks or drips that could damage your property. Being one of the most efficient systems on the market, who needs other heating methods such as gas or electric heat pumps? No gas or electricity line, no energy bills, no pollution.
